Becoming a Driving Instructor ......
We are an independently owned driving instructor training establishment.
Our friendly, well-equipped colleges are all overseen by the industry watchdog and are regularly inspected according to the rules laid down in their Code of Practice. We also abide by the Driving Standards Agency Code of Conduct. This means that we are governed by a strict set of rules covering the quality of our trainers, facilities, methods and materials.
With the best quality personalised training possible in an informal, friendly and adult atmosphere.
What we need from you -
If you think driving instruction is for you but are not sure whether your driving is up to scratch, don't worry! As we will help you develop as you go on, However, legally you must have held a full car licence for at least 3½ years, be able to read a vehicle number plate from at least 90 feet (27.5 metres). Don't worry if you are a contact lens or glasses wearer - you wear your lenses or glasses for the test!
If you have points on your licence, the Driving Standards Agency has the discretion to decide whether or not this will affect your application; each case is taken individually. We cover the full details of all the legal requirements before, we can take you on.

TAKING AN ORDINARY SKILL TO A HIGHER LEVEL
Our training programme is designed with the Driving Standards Agency's three part exam. You take one test at time. Application for your second Test depends on passing the first and so on. The knowledge and skills needed to pass each test are relevant to the others. In other words, a good theoretical knowledge of driving will help your driving skills, which in turn will improve your teaching.
You can take the Part 1 test as many times as you need to, although nearly everyone passes first time.
You can make as many as three attempts at passing Parts 2 and 3. It is very important that you work with your Training Consultant to establish exactly when you are ready to take them. Your Training Consultant won't let you take a test unless you have a really good chance at passing, which means that you have the very best chance of success. We'll do all we can to help make sure you pass!
Because we treat our students as individuals, we might ask you to repeat a section of the course, set you homework, give you extra training materials or ask you to practice certain skills. We do this in your interest, to help you get the most of your training and give you the highest chance of passing all three Parts.
Part 1 Details
The course
- four modules of self-assessment material for home study
- we give you progress assessments between each module,
- we give you the necessary Driving Standards Agency recommended
- reference books
- you get days of classroom training to prepare you
- And there's a mock tests to make absolutely sure you're ready.
The test
Takes place at a Driving Standards Agency examination centre, usually in a major town or city, and consists of
- 100 multiple choice question son subjects including:
- road procedure
- car control
- basic mechanical knowledge
- Highway Code
- Instruction techniques
- The subjects are arranged into 4 bands, each with an 80% pass mark
- The overall pass mark for Part 1 is 85%
- You are given one and a half hours to complete the test. This is generous - and most people finish early. And best of all, nearly all our students pass first time.
-
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE
Your course is planned around your ability, your everyday commitments and the test dates. From the time you pass the first part, you have up to two years to pass Part 3. If you want to and we feel you are capable, you can begin work as an Approved Driving Instructor very quickly.
Provided you pass Parts 1 and 2 the first time you can start work as a trainee driving instructor in as little as 16 weeks. Or you can wait to start work until you pass Part 3,
taking around 20 weeks.* Many people decide to spread the workload and take their time. It's up to you.
*Depending on test date availability and Course waiting times.
Part 2
The Driving Test
- is a driving and eyesight test conducted by a Driving Standards Agency Supervising Examiner
- can be conducted at a Test Centre local to the college or your home
- and is approximately one hour long
- you are expected to drive in a businesslike, disciplined manner along a varied route
and show your ability to manoeuvre and control the car safely.
Career prospects
Once you have passed Part 2 of the course, you can discuss the pros and cons of self-employment versus working with an established school, making sure that you have all the information you need to make the right decision.
Once you have completed this part of the course, you can choose to get a trainee driving instructor licence. You then have up to six months to practice driving instruction during which you can take your part 3 test. Many organisations do prefer their instructors to have passed part 3 before they begin work, but we can give you help and advice about getting yourself accepted at this stage if that is how you want to proceed.
Part 3 Test
You will now have a good knowledge of the subjects any new driver needs to be taught. In preparation for the final test,
This is where you must be able to teach others, and again we give you as much support and help with the course work as we can to maximise your chances of success.
The test
- is approximately 1 hour long, split into two stages, and consists of two role playing exercises
- it takes place in-car
- Your examiner will paint a word picture for you, describing what kind of pupil he or she will be role playing, for example what experience he or she has, you then teach the examiner whilst in the car. This test is designed to mirror a real life driving lesson. Most of our students find it very exciting and challenging.
A business course in modules covering:
- Sales
- Marketing
- Personal Development
- Self Employment
These modules are designed to prepare you for work as an ADI.
Can I study near to my home?
Yes you can, bear in mind that because the course is part time/full-time and we work around your commitments you won't need to attend the college every day. You'll spend some of your time studying at home as part of the course, so even if the college is not on your doorstep it is still easy to fit training around your usual routine.
Can I train at weekends?
We can arrange some of your training for weekends if necessary; please ask for details. The Driving Standards Agency tests are held during the week
Will it fit around my work or family commitments?
Yes, you can take the course in as little as 16 weeks or take your time. We arrange your training around your exiting job or family
Do I have to start work as soon as I qualify?
No. Some people train while working full time and slowly build up their driving instruction work until they have enough to leave full time work.
Depending on how long you delay starting work as a driving instructor, you may need some extra training before you begin. But we are here to help in any way we can.
What happens if I fail one of the 3 Parts?
You can attempt Part 1 as often as you like, although almost all our students pass first time. You can have three tries each at Parts 2 and 3 paying Driving Standards Agency fees for retakes. If you are unlucky enough not to pass at the third attempt,
We carry forward any unused training time until you can re-start the course. We can train you until you pass!
What happens if I want to work with a Driving School, or if I want to set up on my own?
We will help to place you with either a national or local Driving School once you qualify. Alternatively we can offer advice on setting up on your own, to ensure you make the right choice.
It is College policy that all college staff is on a continuous self-advancement and assessment programme. Our Chief Training Consultants has a diploma in Driving Instruction and have had other relevant teacher training, as well as passing their own driving instruction training at very high grades.
